CTU Immigrants Welcoming Center

Rehabilitation of Mixed-Use + Supportive Housing

COMPLETED IN 2023

Centro de Trabajadores Unidos (United Workers’ Center) is a grassroots member-led community organizing group and worker center serving Chicago’s southeast side and south suburbs. CTU strives to build immigrant and worker power, by providing advocacy and support to stabilize low-income immigrant communities and communities of color. CTU Immigrants Welcoming Center is the gut renovation of an existing 2-story masonry building in the South Chicago neighborhood. The renovated facility includes office and meeting space for the non-profit, a commercial kitchen, and two residential units providing temporary housing for recent immigrants in a supportive environment. The commercial kitchen focuses on producing salsas, tortillas, and other foods traditional to CTU members that will be sold as a source of income. The project will also include the development of an adjacent vacant lot into a community garden and greenhouse, producing hyper-local ingredients for the kitchen.
